North West Shopping Center – my dream mall?

Driving past Westgate in West Auckland, you may have noticed that there are a lot of changes going on. Auckland Council is bragging about the big one billion dollar transformation which will bring a new town centre, more jobs and even some new housing. However my eyes are on the brand new NorthWest Shopping Centre! Nothing gets me more excited than a new opportunity to shop, in fact when I first saw the billboard announcing  the new mall I had to pull over and take a closer look.

Plans show a very modern looking two story shopping centre with shared transport areas as well as shared outdoor community spaces. Just down from the shopping centre is a larger retail park which is developing quickly (think Albany mall with the mega centre across the road style). Signs in the site name stores such as Briscoes and Harvey Norman for the park area, along with a Palmers and Mitre 10 which are both already open.

Remember the rumours about an IKEA coming to NZ? Many people including looked at claims that there would be NZ’s first ever IKEA store in the new Westgate development (check out the article here). Although nothing has been confirmed at all and there’s nothing about IKEA that I’ve seen down in the building site, it would be the most perfect spot for a mega IKEA, so I’m still crossing my fingers.

Now to the Shopping Centre. There have only been two stores confirmed so far, a Countdown supermarket and a Farmers. Looking at the size of the mall right now I am super excited because if the Farmers is going to be the main department store of the mall, then it is going to have to be huge! No other stores have been confirmed, but there is one interesting piece of information I can share.

The mall is being developed by NZRPG, a privately owned retail development and investment company, meaning this mall will not be a Westfield. I haven’t decided whether this is a positive or a negative for your average enthusiastic shopper. To give you a feel of what this Shopping Centre could be like, NZRPG also manage Milford Mall on Auckland’s North Shore.

It brings me a bit of excitement as I feel it might bring a bit of difference to the range of stores we have in Auckland malls. Anyone who visits malls around Auckland on a regular basis will understand what I mean when I say they can all begin to feel very the same. It seems like every mall in Auckland has an Amazon, a Cotton On, a JB Hi-Fi etc, and don’t get me wrong I love these shops, but I’d love to see something a bit different too.

North West Shopping Centre is due to open October 2015. I go past the construction site every weekend and it actually looks like it’s coming together really fast. You can bet that I want to be there on opening day, but most of all right now I just want some stores confirmed!

What kind of stores would you love to see in NorthWest Shopping Centre?

My heart cries for a Sephora, IKEA, Lush, a huge Cotton On with a big Typo and while I am really really hopeful, a Forever 21 and H&M.
